LoL  grin   I remember calling socal departure a few times and forgetting what to say, a lot cooler than that guy though... They helped me through it... they said relax and lets start over. But I know what resume own NAV meens!!!

i would be stressed out learning in that airspace.  Instructors rarely can cover every command from ATC before your first solo cx.  I was lucky to learn in D space with friendly controllers. 
Once they told me to "give me a 360 degree spacing turn to the right at the standard rate (2minute)"  Luckily for some reason i knew exactly what they meant. I had to do three of them, Ground Reference turn training came into play also..  It turned out the controller was giving way to Blue Angels 7 entering the pattern in a high speed mid field break landing approach... it was the coolest thing to watch that from my 1982 (c152 going about 70knots) now I say i flew a' formation"pattern with the BA....  When they came to fly the airshow, I got the #7 BA pilot to sign my log book, that was cool too.

Perhaps this is a good example of why students should get a scanner (or listen to Liveatc.net  grin ) as a training aid.   And yes, this controller has reputation of being a grouch sometimes, which doesn't help.  Otherwise, the folks at Socal TRACON are a pleasure to work with,  and very accommodating in my experience.

lol 1. I know this is pretty bad but I found it kind of comical. 2. Yea if the student was checked off to solo, he should know what it meant. I think the instructors need to be a little more strict before letting students solo, especially in the SoCal area

What an Ass..Reminds me of a controller in Long Beach tower.. Regardless of experience, ALL controllers should help, not cause frustration.. We were all nervous on our first cross country..

Wow, sounded like a "misplaced" New York controller. Even so, a hand up would've been far more professional and kind than a... slap down.

I'll tell you one thing, I believe its safe to assume Mr. Student Pilot poured through the books for a "refresher". At least for his sake, I hope he did.

It's always tough to listen to these clips when the guy is just lost up there.  Luckily I had listened to hours and hours of liveatc before I did my cross country solo so I knew what the controllers were saying.  The controller here is a bit rude, but I do understand that his job is to keep everyone up there safe and when there is an unknown factor roaming about his airspace and he has other aircraft I can understand that he might get a bit uptight.  I've run into my fair share of rude controllers, but generally they are really helpful and willing to explain something if I don't understand.
