95kt Loss on Final and a pile of wrecked airplanes
« on: July 05, 2011, 11:52:42 AM »
A nasty cell moved through the Roanoke Regional Airport yesterday afternoon, damaging at least 8 aircraft and providing some interesting dialog.  Here is the condensed tower chatter.  Exactly 2:00 into the clip, the tower controller says "We got a bunch of wrecked airplanes on the ramp ... right now we've got a pile in one spot ... some upside down ..." - that's just after he provides the current winds (020@8 Gusting 59!) to an aircraft waiting to depart! :-o

Yeah, I was surprised how little coverage this received locally - the news reported that the storm had "flipped over a plane at the airport" or something like that.  I had just returned to KROA from a weekend trip to Ohio - came back earlier than planned due to the forecast of afternoon CB, but never expected a storm like this from the TAFs!

I took a couple of pictures the next morning - I'll post them here.  Very sad...

wow......I assume that you work at the airport? I live in northern Botetourt Co. and we didn't have much wind.....and I'm sure that the wind just "flipped a plane over at the airport"...just that much.

I don't work at ROA, I just have a plane there.  I live in southern Botetourt Co, so we're almost neighbors!  We just got a lot of rain at home, but not too much wind either.  It's freaky how the mountains mess with the storm cells - 95kt gusts at the airport, and very little wind just 10 miles away...

Maybe it was in use... maybe the rope broke... maybe it's getting old hearing all the armchair quarterbacking here
