Air Force One lands in Buffalo
« on: May 14, 2010, 01:46:45 PM »
This is just a routine approach and landing for Air Force One @ KBUF yesterday (5/13/10) but pretty exciting for me and the local Buffalo folks that never get to see Air Force One let alone an actual 747 land!

   Dan
PS I took a few pictures of it if anyone is interested let me know.

I would also love to see your pictures.  I grew up a half mile from the end of runway 5 in Cheektowaga.  We could see people in the windows of the planes and wave to them as they landed on 5.

I actually listened to this live and was amused when the approach controller tried to maintain that the ground crews needed time for a runway sweep.  The AF1 captain was clearly interested in landing asap and didn't care much for the sweep if it meant any delay.  Seems reasonable from the pilot's perspective, and I'm quite surprised the controller didn't just relay that to the ground folk.  Minor issue, but I'd think that for the most part, the pilot of AF1 has the final say in deciding when to land since the POTUS' safety is in his hands while he is onboard the aircraft.

- on another note, I'm from Buffalo myself and this was a fantastic listen.  Thanks for putting it up edited!

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I thought that a "sweep of the runway" was for the security and safety of AF1 AND, more importantly,  the POTUS and yet when advised that a sweep of the runway would delay landing the pilot replied "we need to land on time" and instructed ATC to cancel the sweep of the runway :? I heard a similar exchange last year when AF1 was departing Ottawa for Washington and was told to hold short for a sweep of the runway. Again the pilot advised that a sweep was "not necessary....advise when runway is clear"

As most of you are aware, it is a MAJOR point of pride with AF1 crew that they arrive at their destination at the PRECISE SECOND scheduled, i.e. if they are scheduled to arrive at an airport at 10:00 am the aircraft comes to a complete stop on the tarmac as the clock strikes 10:00 am but I wonder if this causes them to take extra chances?  Is it really worth forgoing a security sweep of a runaway so that the POTUS will arrive at his destination at the precise minute scheduled?

A few weeks ago the world saw how this "get there on-time at all costs" mentality can wipe out the entire leadership of a country.

I just hope that they are not taking unnecessary chances with the safety of the POTUS. Maybe I'm just worried about nothing. How do other people feel?

I don't think it was a security sweep they were talking about, but sending the "sweeper" down the runway to clean any potential debris (fod) from the runway. My guess is the airport management already steps up their sweeping schedule in preparation for the "big day" but were just being extra careful. Conversely the aircrew and secret service have possibly decided it's safer not hold in the air or on the ground then to land on a runway that is probably well maintained anyway.

I heard when AF1 was at 3 mile final the runway sweep was about to be done, "Continue vehicle on the runway, they will be coming off momentarily" and there was an airplane at 7 mile final, vehicle is off the runway, AF1 cleared to land.
It was a debris cleanup most likely, they do that at full (car) speed about 30 mile per hour or so...
