American 1696 Smoke in the Cabin
« on: April 16, 2015, 12:04:50 AM »
On Monday April 13th, 2015 at approximately 18:35Z (2:35 pm local), American Ailines flight 1696 declared an emergency with La Guardia Departure stating they had a smoke smell in the cabin.  They subsequently climbed to 5000ft and were given radar vectors to John F Kennedy International Airport (KJFK).  Amid a flurry of radio calls by JFK Final Approach control to clear them a spot in line, they were vectored to runway 22R (shortened) and landed without further incident.  This incident was reported by the airline saying the aircraft's left engine ingested a bird during the takeoff, which was the cause of the burning smell on board.  This incident goes to show the highly capable aircrew and air traffic controllers abilities.

I'm sorry I can't edit the clip all together but here are the times for each feed and their corresponding locations:
La Gaurdia Depparture: 18:35:00Z - 18:37:04 after declaring the emergency flight crew says they're too busy to give fuel and souls on board

Will try to edit together a clip sometime later today (unless someone beats me to it), but in the meantime... please consider deleting the attachments to your post. The links to the archives are sufficient; the attachments just waste space on the forum server and add misleading/annoying entries to the 'Interesting Recordings' page.

didn't think a few mb's was anything to be worried about but I'll delete them.  what are you using for editing? I'd gladly do the editing myself if I knew how and what to use.  Didn't want the links to the audio to be lost was the main reason I attached the audio.

OK I went ahead and edited it to put the clips in order and took out the dead space but left most of the other traffic comms to give an idea of the whole picture.  Listen to the JFK controller when 1696 is switched to him to see how quickly he's working.  There was no original dead space that needed to be taken out he was literally going that fast.  Anyhow this is the first time I've attempted to edit together something so let me know what you think but be gentle if possible.

Hello guys!

Working on a video about this. Thanks to Semper for sharing and working the audio. Could anyone help me with these parts to transcript them?

0:13- It smells like some's burning... ?¿?¿?

7:30- And American 1696, the emrgency vehicles will be on frequency 121.65 and that's also another ground frequency so you'll be speaking to [...?¿..] switch to 121.65

Thanks!! :-) :-)

What I heard:

0:13 They can smell something burning, let's... [Speculation: pilot unintentionally keyed the mic]

7:30 ...so you'll be speaking to both us and them on switch to 121.65
