Cactus1101 Bird Strike KROC 3-11-10
« on: March 11, 2010, 11:48:42 AM »
Hey Everyone,

I saw this on the twitter update on the main Liveatc page this morning. Catus1101 (US Airways A319, 124 souls 19,000 fuel) Strikes a flock of birds and returns safely to the airport. You can hear the panic in the pilots voice. Very much an Oh S**T Moment!!  :? Good job by the crew and ATC!!

Very True, Didn't even think of that!

Earlier in the day the controller war warning about that flock of birds to a few other planes. I think I put one or two in there!

What term did the pilot use regarding the engine?  "High something or other in one engine"  Sounded like he said "high EDT in one engine?"

Thx for sharing.  I had been taking this flight almost weekly for the past 4 or 5 months.

That referred to the engine temp EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature).
Usually happens when the fuel/air ratio is too high. Without going into the technical details, the engine exhaust 'tube' basically becomes a big blow torch.

Nice clip speedotann!

"A US Airways Airbus A319-100, registration N753US performing flight US-1101 from Rochester,NY to Charlotte,NC (USA) with 124 people on board, was in the initial climb out of Rochester's runway 22, when the crew reported they had hit a couple of birds and needed to return to Rochester. They were almost instantly cleared to land on runway 22. Subsequently the crew reported a high EGT on one of the engines and confirmed they had hit a flock of birds. The Airbus landed safely on runway 22 7 minutes after departure."
