JFK Paraglider
« on: August 16, 2009, 08:03:47 PM »
Archive - 17th August 0030-0100, then 0100-0130 catches the action.

It appears a stray paraglider is crossing the aproach  :-o Apparantly not a hazard to aircraft, but the police helicopter is checking it out.

I would advise checking the archives mentioned above. I can't really edit it in any way, as information is added to pretty much every transmission.

Starts around 0040-0045 and is ongoing to [indefinite]

On a 030 heading, 1000ft about 2 miles up the approach. Apparantly touched down near the field, and took off again. Initial report from pilot on the ground, no target on radar.

I was listening on the freq at that point since I was monitoring my sister-in-law's flight coming in. Apparently they broke off many of the aircraft on the approach. She's a flight attendant and was told do do the final cabin checks and told to expect landing at 8 PM but they ended up landing 45 minutes later.

Here's the clip. I cut out much of the interim chatter (but not all).

Whatever the reason may have been, that is some seriously disturbing news. If a bird can take down an engine I don't want to imagine what a paraglider can do on.
