Cessna Cardinal gear up landing, Van Nuys, CA (KVNY)
« on: April 28, 2013, 07:56:16 AM »
Originally attempted Santa Monica, decided to go to Van Nuys as they have grass, ended up sliding in the grass only 100 feet.  The Cardinals gear was stuck just in the hanging position. Great job by the pilot, controllers, and those assisting over the radio, including a maint guy on the ground at SMO, followed by a Grumman in the air at VNY.  They tried to pull some G's over the Warner Center to no avail.
Not sure what kind of antenna the Santa Monica feed has, but reception of aircraft north of the airport could use work, although it is picking up the tower great.
Van Nuys feed is sounding great with the Pro-136, and a new tiny Rasberri-Pi linux box.
This is a combo of the L70/Socal, SMO and VNY feeds with silence removed.

Of all the foldy-leg airplane pilots I know, none of them would choose grass over pavement for a gear-up landing.  You're just asking for more injuries and damage.

Glad it worked out for this pilot.
