Goodfellas at JFK
« on: October 19, 2007, 09:57:41 PM »
I've listened to hundreds of hours from LiveATC's great archive, and this edited clip is my personal favorite.

It's a 3-part exchange between a Delta 737 pilot departing JFK for LAS and one of those inimitable JFK tower controllers who sound like Clemenza from The Godfather.

The thing is, this pilot is having some fun with the controller, putting on a fake Brooklyn accent and never breaking his character (though he slips up when he says "cleared for takeoff").

It's the first time I've heard a pilot actually doing character work (as opposed to telling a joke or limerick).

Though it's debatable whether it's a good thing or not, and I put up a poll to get your viewpoint.

The attached poll is misleading.  These guys were not goofing around during the takeoff sequence.  That would be inappropriate.  They were still moving slowly and safely in a line of traffic at JFK, which isn't nearly as bad.  Does this violate sterile cockpit?  We don't know.  The f/o may just have been talking funny on the radio, but not saying anything when the mic wasn't keyed.  There is no such thing as sterile radio.

Believe it it or not that was not an act. That is the way he actually talks. I worked with him many times before.

I've removed the poll because it really isn't necessary as part of this thread.  People can chime in with their own, individual opinions as they would like to.

"I'm a happy guy." Nice and SAFE way to break the tension there. Even got a tower invite to boot.
