DAL8891 or AAL1209 KPHL 10-22-10
« on: October 26, 2010, 08:08:21 AM »
DAL8891 (B744) on final to KPHL early Friday morning had to go around because AAL1209 was trying to takeoff from the same runway (27R).  DAL8891 was first asked to sidestep to 27L but was unable to do so and had to go around.  AWI3584 already had to go around as his landing (on RWY35) apparently would have conflicted with RWY 27 traffic.  The controller's association blamed the American pilot for being to slow to take the runway while American blamed the controller for trying to fit the AAL departure into too tight a space.  Clip is in real time with no edits/cuts.

Interestingly, the Delta was a charter flight returning the Philadelphia Phillies to Philly from San Francisco during the National League Championship Series.

From what I heard the AAL barely moved at all from the time they received the TIPH clearance. At 1:35 AAL1209 reads back TIPH and says he's ready to go. At about 2:15 he reads back his takeoff clearance. At 2:30 he says he doesn't think there's enough room and the the controller tells him to hold short but he's "just crossed" the hold short line. So the fact that after almost a full minute of real time passes that seems to back that up. You can hear some heistation in his voice at 2:15. Why he waited 15 more seconds and until he was on the runway to speak up is one for the ages.

Leave it to American and their AMR counterparts for slowing things down.

Yeah, definitely sounds like AA was taking a lot of time to do anything out there.

A high profile aviation attorney would like to blame the controller.  Sounded to me like another typically pathetic effort by an AAL crew.  You really can't count on those guys at all in a tight spot.

I listened to some of this in the archives the next day (I was listing for the phillies plane). It seems to me that the American should have already been in position or close to by the time take off clearence was given. If he thought the 747 was to close, why didn`t he object when the position and hold (line up & wait) was given? Also it didn`t sound to me it was as close a call as the that news clip made it sound like. Is this being classified officially as an incursion?

I wouldn't think so since he was given clearance to enter the runway. I don't think it would be a pilot deviation either since he did comply with ATC instructions, he just did it half-***ed.
