KLAX - Someone with a radio that shouldn't have one.
« on: June 06, 2009, 11:44:55 PM »
I'm not sure of how to pull the recordings yet, I'm new to the forum.

If someone could pull KLAX at 11:38PM EST, there is someone asking repetitively "can you hear me". I was laughing pretty hard. It goes on for about 8 minutes.

That's a captain trying to talk to their pushback crew on the intercom.  Obviously he has no idea how to use his radio selector switch.

I laughed.. Man I'd be pretty annoyed if I was in the tower and that was going on for 8 minutes! Crazy..

My guess is it was a mechanic not a member of the flight crew.

When I worked the ramp in SYR we used to tow planes every night with a contract maintenance person riding the breaks.  He would flash the nosewheel taxi light to let us know when the breaks were on/off.  I suppose one could use the pushback intercom system if one knew how to work the comms.  I guess that wasn't the case here.

By the way Cessna157, I'm guessing you're a first officer.  I'm sure a captain would have posted "..that's an F/O trying to talk to their pushback crew." ;)

Well, you're correct on the FO part, but your reasoning is faulty.  The F/O calls for push, and while he does that, the capt is talking with the ground crews coordinating the pushback.  Traditionally, on the ground, the captain has control of the aircraft.  This is amended during pushback while the F/O starts the engine(s), due to the concentration it takes to start, keeping the captain focused on pushback/taxi.

Lol that was great! I always wondered what kept people from trying to get on an ATC freq and just start saying random stuff. Not like they could find the person doing it.

How do you know it wasn't a prankster with a handheld radio...I think it would be that as they wouldnt be on tower freq anyway
