Extremely sad situation.   I saw on CNN this morning the MSP area had some 70+ mph straight line winds.  Sounds like that wind shear alert came a tad too late...

If you listen @ ~9:30, there is another pilot talking about cones blowing across the runway at a pretty good clip.

The cones and wind shear alert were for Runway 31 at Rochester.  The flight was on the ILS for Runway 30 at Owatonna.
The cones and wind shear alert are unrelated to what happened, and were unfortunately included in the WCCO audio clip.

sad stuff, being from minnesota it hits close to home.  I live about 60-70 miles north of owatonna and missed the brunt of that storm, but still felt the effects with the wind and lightning.  With owatonna being within 20 miles I would think of rochester, the wind shear had to be nearly as bad conditions and hard to land in

I believe that is KRST Tower telling the ground ops. to move to cones back to the taxiway they were on before the storm arrived...

I was the one that sent WCCO the info regarding the audio yesterday morning and explained the situation a little for them since ATC "chatter" is a bit foreign to most folks...

It is ironic how the wind shear alert came just around the time of the crash.  Owatonna airport, where the crash occured, is about 30 miles from KRST, and there is no local control tower there.

I am not a local but I would guess MSP 7 (132.35) - Rochester Low.  MSP 25 is Bemidgi.

Interesting - maybe they didn't think they would make the end - possibly too fast on the approach?  They did recover the cockpit voice recorder, hopefully that will shed enough light on things.

FYI - the clip for this crash was added to the LiveATC archive, but when I went to listen to it, all I heard was a "buzz" throughout the audio.
Could someone please check that and, if possible, download the feed again.
Thank you.

Try reloading it on a different media player, I was able to download the attached clip and listen to it no problem.

Best,

Thanks for the clarification.  Yeah, the chatter is a bit foreign which is why i've been listening every chance I get.  I'm going to start lessons soon and the thing that concerns me the most is the communication, but after listening for a while it's really not that bad.   But.....I'm sure it's different when you actually have to follow the instructions   :-)
