KBOS AAL2410 fuel emergency

Today at KBOS between 16:00L and 16:20L on KBOS Final Approach and Tower freqs. As you will hear, fuel emergency was due to a go around initiated by Final Approach controller because of spacing issues.

Great clip. According to flight aware AAL2410 is a Boeing 737-800.... Anyone know what the fuel consumption rate of the 737 might be around approach power?

I know 100LL is about 6 lbs per gallon but not sure the weight of jet fuel.

What happened to a go-around with like enough fuel to go to an alternate and a hold for 30 minutes before landing?  I thought it used to be normal to have more fuel.

If memory serves 6.8lbs per gallon. Though we are kgs/litre in NZ!

From a buddy who flies the -800 here, he told me reserve entered on the FMC is 1,500kgs ( 3,300lbs ). AA2410 said he had 6000lbs.

A gallon of Jet A or Jet A1 weigh 6.8 pounds. Your memory does serve!  8-)

JP4 weighs in at 6.4 pounds per gallon.

100LL weights in at 6.02 pounds per gallon at Standard Temp (59 deg F).

They still had enough. Plenty of fuel to reach some alternates. The "minimum fuel" call is made way before any option is lost and things get tight. Imagine an airport having to close unexpectedly (debris on the runway etc) - it'd be a bit late then for a pilot to notify ATC about being low on fuel, with no alternate options remaining...

To put things into perspective, here's some numbers from an operator's manual of another airline (737-300 though):

Recommended fuel on arrival (on ground): 8300lbs
Minimum fuel: 6300lbs (anything below: tell ATC, ask for no delay...)
Fuel contingency for alternate: 2000lbs / 20minutes

As a rough estimate, 6000lbs are about enough for another 60minutes of cruise flight...
