NWA42 returns to EHAM escorted by F16's
« on: August 23, 2006, 05:40:17 PM »
This morning arround 11:30 local the North West Airlines 42 returned to Schiphol, Amsterdam escorted by two F16 fighters. There is no file in the archives of this incident.
Though on the Frequency Monitor Centre you can find a recording of the interept and return of this flight.
In this clip you can hear the NWA42 in contact with Amsterdam, you hear fighter control Bandbox in contact with the AJ23 and AJ60, the F16 fighters.

Yes, It is the same incident. (There has been no confirmation of the mobile phone in Dutch papers.) It seems like looking Muslim, boarding a plane and playing with a mobile phone is enough to get you arrested nowadays.

The recordings are used widely by the Dutch Media on radio an television and CNN mentions it on the website: http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/europe/08/23/schiphol/index.html

But as allways the media does not now how to interpeted these com's during a intercept and many stations and newspapares gave a wrong view of the inicident.

Keep it civil here, please.  We don't need any of this.

Media reporting re NWA42 returns to EHAM
« Reply #7 on: August 24, 2006, 08:41:05 AM »
As far as I can piece together information from the media (reliable details are hard to get):
  • A group of twelve males boards the plane
  • One of them had his phone ringing (likely a text message)
  • Hilarity among them, irritation with the crew
  • They start passing the phone
  • Air marshalls start rushing through the plane
  • Pilot decides to turn back to EHAM
  • The group of 12 people get arrested on arrival

I apologize for my rather abrasive response above.

Mathfox, do you base your observations and obtain all of your information from what you read in the press?

I find your opinion above regarding Muslims being arrested for "looking muslim, boarding a plane and playing with a mobile phone" to be quite arrogant and ill-informed.

Do you have any first hand experience in dealing with the logistics or security of an international airport?

Thanks for your apologies and I apologise for my omission of <sarcasm> tags in the original post and being very terse in my summary. Sorry.

I don't think this forum is the correct place to discuss the ins and outs of airport and airline security. I just want to say that I use my eyes when passing the airport "security" checkpoints and have my opinions. If you want to discuss the issues with me, send me a private message.
