Yep, we were doing a lot of partial panel and approaches. I was flying with an former Navy pilot (F-16s) and we were practicing emergency ILS approaches. This was the training he was taught and later taught while he was in the navy. The scenario was: You've had your head up your butt and you're now low on fuel. There are no VFR conditions for 500 miles and everywhere within forever is below ILS minimums. So, you're going to practice shooting an approach and landing blind. He said he wouldn't let me ruin the airplane. As we get closer to the flare point, if things weren't going as planned, he would tell me i'm "visual" and i can look up and land, or he would take over and land in the flare. We did that and he didn't even have to touch the controls. He thought i was cheating (peeking through the foggles), which i wasn't. So we did it again at BUF (23) and i greased another as he watched me like a hawk! We were rolling out and i asked, "Am i visual?" He laughed the whole way home (9G3). Boy that was fun.

Thanks,
Greg

PS i liked the "welcome back" from the IAG controller.  ;)

I've been in the Tower/TRACON at Travis AFB before, the controllers there are great, helped out alot. And this one lady in TRACON I will never forget, she was training a newbie, and was so nice and helpful with my questions.

Damn, seven retiries?  Starting to wish that NY was one of my five picks then.  Anyone have any good news about CA, TX, FL, GA, or HI gerarding  new retires.  Im CTI complete in Dec and hope to get a call since Ive racked up the bills. Plus if anyone has contacts in any of these states please let me know.

Great stories!

This part got my attention, though:

You're sure about that? :)

@ davolijj,

The ASDE installations were done by Sensis Corporation which has its headquarters in Syracuse. Here is a little blurb on the installation http://www.sensis.com/docs/162/

If you drive by the towers you can see their name on one of the buildings adjacent to the tower structures. I call on Sensis and it's usually interesting stuff going on in their facilities.

Another Syracuse based company heavily involved in airport lighting equipment is Jaquith http://www.jaquith.com/  There is a good chance that the airport you are flying into or out of has their runway and/or taxiway lights.

Cheers,

JW

Keith, now I'm having a brain fart. I'm pretty sure that's right. I know, someone is going to say the Navy didn't have F16s. Next time I see him I'll ask.

Thanks for the info JW.  I had no idea about those companies being in SYR, and I lived there for 25 years!!
