A massive fire in a Vancouver suburb has destroyed a condominium project with towering flames that could be seen from more than 30 kilometres away.

The blaze broke out in Richmond, B.C., at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday evening, quickly burning down the six-storey building that was still under construction.

Firefighters worked to keep the blaze from spreading, but they could not prevent flaming ash from falling onto nearby homes.

The fire caused about 10 other spot fires at nearby homes because of flying embers.

There was no serious damage to those homes, but an abandoned house adjacent to the construction project also burned down.

Seventeen people were taken to a nearby hotel while the structure was being extinguished.

Large crowds of local residents gathered in the street to see the bewildering blaze and its speedy destruction of the soon-to-be-finished building.
