So called powerbacks are done, but usually on older aircraft (DC-9) with the eingines on the tail and on turbo props. The reason for this is that the reversers work differently. On a modern aircraft, the engine would probably suck in it's own hot air again and would overheat. Furthermore a lot of the air is let out to the sides and it would be too dangerous as things or even people could be thrown around or sucked up. There are some videos of powerbacks on the net. I believe, I have seen some of NWA DC-9 aircraft. Just search for "powerback" on flightlevel350.com and you should be able to find some.

And by the way, I would be interested in the pilot's response as well so it would be awesome if Hollis would post when this occured exactly!

Yep, that is correct.  I used to travel a lot by commercial airlines in the late 80s and early 90s and actually got to experience one of these as a passenger first hand.  The aircraft was an MD80 and we were parked at a gate at Rochester, NY.  I recall hearing the engines spool way up, feel the airplane go backwards, and thinking, "wow, this airplane has a reverse gear."   :)

After reading about this I discovered that, if the airport allows this type of pushback, the airline would limit this to tail-mounted engine aircraft primarily to reduce the risk of the engine ingesting apron-based debris.
