Just had a bird strike (w/photo)
« on: November 26, 2010, 02:47:39 PM »
Just landed in BDL and we had a bird strike.  Was pilot flying, on the ILS 6.  Unfortunately in our landing flare, at about 15', flock of small birds flew up and crossed our path.  Took out 2 of them.  One on the left windshield, the other on the right side RVSM safety area.

Someone can probably find it in the archives. Not a whole lot said, except me telling tower as we were turning off.  I think an airport vehicle went to the runway to clean up the debris shortly after.

We landed around 1307 EST, if someone want to try to edit the archive down to a clip.

Here's the remains on the windshield:

Here's another bird strike photo; this one from 15 November 2010.  Feathers flying everywhere.

Be sure to let the catering company know so they can run by and pick it up. We shouldn't let perfectly good food go to waste.

I guess that's one good way for airlines to save some money, "runway kill"

Looks like the birds are a big problem at the airport. I work in Airfield Management and when ever birds get bad we shoot pyrotechnics to avoid these incidents. Pyros are basically like fireworks, they make a lot of noise and scare off the birds. I know sometimes you can't really avoid these situations but over time and with persistence, you can lower bird strikes.
