KDAB Crash
« on: June 10, 2014, 12:12:04 AM »
A Cessna crashed on take off from KDAB this evening just before 10pm local.  The plane was from Phoenix East Aviation.  A few minutes before this recording starts "Phoenix 35" was inbound for 7R and was "Cleared for the Option".

Used to work there for a short time.  Small airport with small but very well trained staff - sounds like a very professional response from the controller and ground crews.

For reference:
 - Alert 3 is a critical incident involving an aircraft (ie: crash)
 - A/C with callsign "Riddle" belong to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
 - ARFF is Airport Rescue Firefighters

After going through my raw Mode-S data it appears he was flying about 45 minutes before the crash.  Since that plane wasn't transmitting Lat/Long I couldn't tell if he was in the pattern the entire time or had just came back to do some touch-n-goes.

However on the last take-off it appears the plane climbed to 650' ASL, I then lost his mode-s at 450' (strange cause I usually get them down to 100' at KDAB) at 21:55:20 EDT.

Tail Number: N5524L  Mode-S: A709C8

Is "Air One" the local police department helicopter? Or is that just ARFF?

Air One is the counties Sheriff's Helo.  I know they have a hanger at the Deland airport (about 15 miles West of KDAB) and I believe they also have a hanger at KDAB.

On a side note, based on what I heard on the local news radio station the female you heard in the recording was actually the flight instructor.

Also, some news broadcasts mention the Cessna was taking off and trying to return to the field. I believe that is in error.  I just drove past the crash site and the Cessna crashed in a very small open area surrounded by trees almost like it just "fell" out of the sky about 100 yards from the departure end of 7R.  Sad to say, but if it were an engine problem there really was no where to go, especially at night.  I am more inclined to believe it was a departure stall caused by either engine failure OR pilots seat sliding backwards.  It looked like fire burned the entire cockpit area forward.  Only thing recognizable was the tail and fuselage up to the back window.

Sad evening for single engine planes, less than 2 hours before the KDAB crash, another single engine crashed into a housing development about 40 miles south of KDAB killing 2 on board.

Video from Air-One of the Aircraft Re: KDAB Crash

Here is a link to the video from Air-One.  It appears this video starts a minute or 2 after the crash.

Something that puzzles me.  I never see ARFF arrive at the crash.  The fire truck you see pull up to the plane appears to be a Daytona Beach City firetruck from a station about 2 miles from the crash site. Took over 10 minutes for the fire truck to arrive, took 2 minutes to put out the fire.  Being the crash was on airport property, why wouldn't the ARFF crash trucks have been there, and been there sooner?
