This happens when you don't pay attention. But I am very surpriesed from the controller, I had the idea that most of the controllers are cocky and not very tolerant towards acceptable mistakes. If I was the controller, I'd make some remark to the first officer, that's for sure.  :D

sounds like a last minute gate change caused the mixup. Not the flight crews fault if the info wasn't passed along to them.

I can just imagine how stupid they must feel, sitting on the wrong side of the building.  Next up: explaning to your passengers... "Yeah oops - sorry!"  Good thing it was at the end of their flight, not at the beginning!   8)

- Dude, did you not listen!?  Sounds more like a gate change, rather a crew mistake...
