KFMY Bird Strike & Emergency Landing
« on: February 25, 2014, 12:30:29 AM »
Many of you heard about the bird strike Robert Weber encountered in his Piper Saratoga on his way into Fort Myers Page Field (FMY) in Florida on Saturday February 22, 2014. I took some time tonight to find and compile the recording. Some parts are cut out because clearance delivery, ground, tower are combined feeds.

Watch the full video of the bird strike he caught on his GoPro camera: http://www.news-press.com/article/20140224/NEWS0110/302240024/Page-Field-approach-becomes-emergency-bird-strikes-aircraft

UPDATE: New file attached which is compressed to nearly 13 times the size of the original I posted, but still the same length.

Hadn't noticed there was already an edit of this up here; so this is pretty much the same thing. I edited for silence and unrelated traffic until the start of the emergency (25 seconds into the clip), and then left everything as is, so it's about a minute longer. As mentioned, feed carries both tower and ground and sometimes it feels like ground has priority, but it might just be bad luck. Anyway, we miss the initial mayday calls (discernible in the video) due to a full route clearance on ground (clearance and read back cut from the clip, a partial repeated read back is still in there)

Also, ChrisMOlmstead, 128kb/s is a bit overkill at 22khz mono, try setting it at 32 or 16 (or lowest possible VBR setting), for this kind of content it ought to be just fine and it'll cut the file size almost by an order of magnitude.

Thanks for the input. This is my first audio compile and submission, so I'll keep that in mind for next time.

Awesome.  Glad he was able to maintain positive control and live to talk about it.

The first time I watched this straight through, I swore I thought the bird came through to the inside and went into the back of the aircraft.  But after doing a frame-by-frame through the 0:18-0:20 segment, it seems like the bird went sliding off to the right on the outside of the windscreen, and what I originally thought was the bird coming back is just the piece of fabric or whatever Robert had across the dash there.

Interesting to be able to listen to the ATC comms through the radio path, and then see the camera view with the in-cockpit audio.   Wow - just wow...
