It's not the question what sounds better to this (unprofessional) controller at JFK. Rules are rules and the wording has been changed for a reason. He should just get used to it and stop whining about the change.

Well I believe it was the pilot that read back "position and hold" as the controller initially said "line up and wait" and then corrected the pilot, who then said he liked "position and hold" better.  So it's not the "...(unprofessional) controller," rather, it was the pilot.

It has not exactly been an easy change for those who have been saying it for years on end.  It wasn't just a one or two word change, it was a complete phraseology change... which isn't as easy as turning a light switch on and off.

Isn't it the pilot who repairs his own mistake and the controller who says that "position and hold" sounds much better to him? Either way, an active frequency is not the place to discuss what a controller and/or a pilot likes better.

I think it's more professional when you say "Line up and hold your horses, cowboy! Yeeeehaw! That might be a good one to try.  :-D

With even more vigor than before, the ICAO is continuing to push it's agenda on the FAA with the following phraseology changes

"Cleared for take off" will be replaced with "It's okay to go up in the air."
"Cleared to land" will be replaced with "You can make the wheels touch the ground."
"Maintain VFR" will be replaced with "don't go in the clouds."
and
"Taxi-via..." will be replaced with "follow yellow signs..."

Look for posters popping up in your airport and crew rooms soon!

HAHAHA very true.  It can't get much "easier" to understand.

A controller also suggested, "Pull it out and hold it" instead of "Line Up and Wait."

As part of the new phraseology change, there are signs posted all over our facility and on the door to the tower we have one (it says, "Remember... Line Up And Wait").  Some of us got confused and waited outside the tower for instructions.

I suggested that the signs be placed outside of doctors offices starting in about 4 years...

Hmmm... you know, speaking of cash register, maybe each tower should have a jar, like the swear-jar you grew up with. Whenever a pilot or controller says "position and hold," he or she would have to put a dollar in the jar.

I give ATC guys all the props in the world man.  they r under huge pressures, every word can be life or death at time.  They have to learn these changes and unlearn years of doing something.. that would be really hard.

Last night I was listening to KJFK Tower and heard the controller say "...hurry up and wait, CORRECTION, Line Up And Wait..."
I was going to grab it and cut it and post it...but the archives were down during that time period, and are not available...oh well, still funny...

It's harder to "unlearn" something when an individual (eg the one in the clip) clearly doesnt like the change and is biased.  For those who dont mind the change, the changeover will not take too long.  After the stage of having to think about saying it each time, it will become natural and second nature after repetition.  This isnt the first time phraseology has changed and wont be the last.

I still don't understand why the change is such a big deal. The rest of the world has been doing it for a while. How many times have you heard some be told to hold short and read back position and hold?
The change makes sense, now stop complaining about it and move on with your lives.
