A British Airways jet has caught fire at Las Vegas airport sending smoke billowing into the air.

Audio is from LAS Tower #1 and ground.

Thanks for the audio. The Speedbird pilots had a tough time getting through to the controller, but she saw the fire herself and did a good job sending Delta for the go-around.

Re, the videos under the news link: Disappointing to see how manu passengers took SUITCASES with them for the evacuation. The practice really needs to be made illegal, and a warning given to passengers on the safety briefing.

Could anyone tell at what point it exactly caught fire?

They stopped on the runway right? Anyone knows at what point approximately?

County Mobile Seven

this is correct.

The ground operations outside of the Ground controller (read: Ramp controller) is operated by the Clark County Dept. of Aviation. So it is the county that controls the maintenance there, not the airport itself.

To clarify, in the United States the airport authority decides which parts of the airport may be used at any time by the air traffic controllers.

Obviously a controller isn't going to use a runway where there is a disabled aircraft, but the airport authority was notifying the local controller that runway 07L was closed until further notice.

Just an observation from watching the videos and listening to the passenger interviews it seems like the only people who knew that plane was on fire was the
passengers on the left side by the engine.  One passenger on the right side said they couldn't figure out why the left side passengers were running towards the doors.  He said the flight attendants were still telling people that everything was okay and to remain seated.  One passenger interviewed said that one of the pilots came out of the cockpit and told people to sit down but then saw the fire and started yelling to evacuate.  Another passenger said when the flight crew finally opened the doors the smoke started coming into the cabin and the flight attendants started to panic.

My thought is that if the crew had waited any longer to evacuate this could have ended badly.  Am I wrong here?
