KTVC student, lost?
« on: April 24, 2010, 12:46:16 AM »
All he needed to do was taxi straight ahead on charlie.  A few wrong turns and a lot of nerves later lead to an interesting dialog.

Go straight on Charlie taxiing can be very confusing, so here's the airport diagram...

This was a tough one, finding the parking ramp...

Can you learn to get a feeling of direction, or do you have to be born with it?

Born with it!! It takes common sense to have direction sense... I bet this guy was super book smart, but no common sense.... I have a few friends who are like that, no common sense and always get lost! LoL

The controller did have a lot of patience, hats off to him.

At some airports, taxiing can be confusing no matter what level of experience. I find KFLL rather confusing at times. I see the "gps" "satnav" joke above.  Actually, my Garmin 496 GPS has a feature called "SafeTaxi". It works well enough... but there are times when it's not quite fast enough.

One thing that I do to help me:  I have an clear acetate sheet that I place over my airport diagram on my kneeboard; then just after I exit the runway and contact ground control... I run a highlighter over the taxi ways I was given clearance for - before I throttle up to taxi. Then just wipe the sheet clean when I'm done.

That's a way good idea!  I might have to get in to that habit as well.

Holy HELL, that guy was LOST!  What a space-case.  Hope he doesn't fly the same way he taxis.
