MU-2 Severe Icing
« on: January 01, 2012, 03:28:36 AM »
This is the radio communication/conversation between air traffic control and a Mitsubishi MU-2 that suffered severe icing - and was losing altitude.  FAST!  Dropping like a stone!
Egad!  This is spooky!  Especially to pilots who understand what these guys were up against.  Iced up.  IFR.  Over the mountains.  Double engine failure.  Not much else could happen to make things worse, unless they were also on FIRE.  Thank God (and especially the rapid, correct actions by the pilots) they survived.  If you are a non-pilot and can't comprehend exactly how BAD their situation was, suffice it to say - they were in VERY deep doo-doo and within maybe one minute of being a FATAL accident.

These pilots must be VERY proficient to accomplish what they did under these dire circumstances.
MU-2 Severe Icing Over High Terrain in Okanangan Valley near Kelowna, BC.  This is absolutely chilling radio traffic between the pilot and Kelowna Air Traffic Control.
Just click on link, below.  (Good thing the passengers couldn't hear this conversation!!)

Interesting to hear again.  I first heard this about 20-25 years ago played at a flight instructor refresher clinic given by Rod Machado.  There are many great lessons in this tape including Keep flying the plane! but my favorite is at the end where the ATC and the copilot are nearly celebrating that they have made it through this and the old voice of experience from the captain reminds them that it ain't over yet, they still have to land and the plane is damaged.  One thing not pointed out in the tape is that all this occurred at night.

wow....didnt realize this was at night.

I can only imagine the tension in that cockpit and the rush when they got that first engine lit back up still knowing
that any instant it could still be over.

I think I'll set this up on MS Flight Sim and see what it must have been like and
how many times I would have bounced off the ground and the hills.

Wonder just how close they came to hitting something?
