N444YP - 1 Fatal + 4 Injured KMYF San Diego Crash 8/2/10
« on: August 03, 2010, 03:32:11 AM »
  Long time listener but this is my first post and attempt at editing ATC audio - so please be gentle.  This is the entire ATC recordings of the experimental Velocity that crashed in San Diego (MYF) today. It includes the pilot's initial call to ground, tower, the emergency and then the aftermath with fire rescue and news helicopters.

I edited it down for time and cut out much of the unrelated calls. It's still long.
Only the emergency itself is in real time. At around 7:10 you hear his last transmission that was blocked by ATC warning him of low altitude. I found another feed and pasted in the much clearer final transmission of the pilot declaring he was landing in the golf course.
God bless them all.

Info about the crash and photos:

Cheers,
Sam

at the 5:10 mark. . .
N444YP: "Aah, I got a door open four yankee pappa, I got a problem. were coming around"
Tower: "four yankee pappa, you're declaring emergency?"
N444YP: "eh, Montgomery, 4YP coming around I got a door open"

Tower: "4 yankee pappa, are you declaring emergency?"
N444YP: "eh, Yeah need emergency"

6:05 mark
N444YP: "Coming around, eh going down"

For an unpressurised airplane like this experimental, would it really matter to have a door open? It can affect the airflow maybe, but how much?
I know we use to call this GA types lawnmowers with light engines,

One of the witnesses said there was debris falling from the plane. Who knows if it was merely internal panels or structural.

I give the controller a lot of credit for holding it all together as well as he did.  I know it's part of training, but I'd have thought, if resources were available, he'd have gotten some relief.

A little chilling -- MYF was my home away from home airport for most of 2005, and every position report allowed me to remember the area well.  Mt. Healy, Mt. Soledad, 15, 8, etc.  Even a couple of the tail numbers.

RIP to the woman who lost her life, and God bless and help the family.

A news station in San Diego reports names of the victims. It was a dad, mom and three kids.

Very possible.  Could have been maps, approach plates etc also.

According to a witness (10news link above):
"What was that [...] coming out of the plane? [...] and we were picking it up. It was fiberglass pieces, like, you know, white on the outside, black ... Velcro kind of things on the inside, and it was just pieces."

The door itself was found about a mile from the crash site, so sound like a structural disingration in flight.  With the latest focus on homebuilts/experimentals by congress in the latest FAA Re-Authorization bill discussions, this isn't going to help.

For an unpressurised airplane like this experimental, would it really matter to have a door open? It can affect the airflow maybe, but how much?

The doors on a Velocity open vertically. An open door on a typical Cessna, Piper, etc. is not really an issue because the horizontal wind flow will keep them closed.  Not so on the Velocity.

Ok thanks, didn't knew that, so to sort it out a bit it is also a Pushprop that can cause the shatter of the door?
e.g. coming loose and hit the propeller?

I also noticed it has a retractable gear, would a belly landing would have made a difference?

Here are a couple pics of a Velocity Super XL RG5. In the first pic, the Gull Wing style doors are clearly visible.

Tragic. Without trying to pass blame or second guess what he was going through, I wonder if he could have made it back as the plane was probably still capable of flying (unless the prop was damaged). The noise and the fact that things were blowing out probably convinced him that a precautionary landing was necessary. We won't know though until the accident report is out. Obviously the door did come off.

I was about 4 planes behind that Velocity that day to take off.  The Controller was actually asking me if we could see anything down below as we made an East Departure on 28R but I couldn't.  On my way back in I had to navigate thru the heli's surrounding the area.

I've never flown one, but am very interested in the Velocity.  I read a writeup from a Velocity owner who had a door pop open in flight and he was barely able to control the aircraft.  The problem is that door creates tremendous drag, and makes the plane pivot around that point rather than other control surfaces...  The other own modified his plane to change the doors to forward opening.  (Why don't I find that link?)

Here it is: http://www.velocityxl.com/wiki/index.php?title=Brim_N87BR

If I ever end up buying or building one of these, I think that's a mod I'll definitely plan.
