PC-12 crash at KBDR 6.12.09
« on: June 12, 2009, 09:40:03 PM »
Today at approx 0740, a PC-12 N877AF from KOWD to KBDR with 5 passengers and 2 crew landed long in fog and drizzle and impacted the steel non-frangible blast fence at the end of RWY 06 (4677 x 150 ft). Audio here, about 1/2 way into the recording. I have no editing skills, so please edit if needed:

7 injuries and no fatalities, story can be found here:

Interestingly enough, on 4.27.94, a PA-31 with 9 aboard crashed into the same non-frangible blast fence at night in fog, killing 8 of 9 aboard. The NTSB advised a safety zone be built at the end of 06, but for 15 years the residents and politicians of Stratford have been fighting this while the owners of the airport (city of Bridgeport) have been fighting to install it. I hope that this opens everyones eyes to the need of an EMAS at the end of this runway. Link to the NTSB report of the 1994 crash:

Actually I kind of like listening to these unedited. Gives you a better sense of the event.
I did one run through of your linked file and all I hear is a go-around then a 4 mile final
for the second approach. I suspect the landing is on the next archive. I don't have time
to listen to it again. Good story though.

"A plane crashed at Sikorsky Memorial Airport in Straford this morning with seven people on board. The nose of the PC-12 peeks out of a fence showing just how close the plane came to ending up on Main Street."

Sikorsky Memorial Airport upgrade takes off
06/07/2009

"A proposed safety zone would consist of deep gravel designed to slow a runaway plane and prevent it from crashing into a blast fence at the end of the zone. That blast fence now runs along Main Street, very close to the end of the runway. Three planes have crashed there in the past and skidded onto Main Street, most notably a 1994 accident that claimed eight lives."

The controller says " 877AF, you there?" twice, then nothing. I'm assuming he's looking at him at the end of the runway and trying to see if he's still on the air or not. I'll check the next archive to see what's on it.

Nope, nothing there. About 4 minutes into the 2nd tape, the tower tell an A/C to "stand by, we have an emergency in progress" and that's it. No ARFF comms or anything else of note. Bummer.

Sorry. I missed that.  Sort of ironic city council has funding problems. I wonder how many of the owners of the jets landing there have their money hidden away in offshore tax havens? lol.

OK, for you ops types:

I had a discussion with an ops guy at BDR recently....apparently their ARFF index B truck was there with the one guy aboard within 60 seconds, and full assignments from Bridgeport and Stratford FD shortly thereafter with the medics. Also, the BPT city council has approved a plan, finally, to implement the safety zones as reccomended by the NTSB after the 1994 crash. We shall see....

Here is an update, sorry to bump an old thread:

Looks like BDR is getting is expansion, in the form of EMAS. This is a good thing, so in the future A/C won't have to crash into a steel barrier but can safely come to rest in the loose concrete of the EMAS system..

Finally, RWY 06/24 is back in service with EMAS at the NE end and a new paving job.

Now, let's get to resurfacing 11/29
