Just curious, at around 1:19 of the recording, UAL2838 is asking if there are ships in the harbour.  Anyone know why he is asking this?  Plans to dump to lavatory load on takeoff or something?  :-D

If there are tall ships in the harbor that affect the approach the aircraft must be advised because it may change minimums on their approaches IIRC.

Link...check minimums section of the plate;

But this is a departure.  UAL typically asks this when departing rys 22r/l and several have indicated it's a company requirement; they can't/won't depart with tall ships in harbor.  i've never seen any official definition from them as to what they consider tall or the parameters of what constitute the harbor.  we have a local procedure mandating we report tall vessels in the 4r approach area, for 4r arrivals and 22l departures.  nothing for 22 r departures.

My only guess would be a company requirement from minimum climb gradient?

You take a huge weight penalty for takeoff if there are ships in the harbour.  He just wanted to get it recorded that the tower said that there aren't any ships in the harbour.

UAL328 asks, in my opinion, because the Logan4 DP, which 99% of departures at BOS are assigned, calls for an immediate left turn hdg 140 on wheels up (when departing rwy 22R). This takes the flight off to the left and over Boston Harbor, before overflying Castle Island on its way out. Any ships in the harbor when the plane is making this low left turn could present a tall obstacle in the departure path.

2) Could also be company policy. If LNG tankers are passing through the harbor, no flights are allowed to physically overfly the ship. Could just be a pilot trying to see if he has to look out for anything.
