Recording Application
« on: June 21, 2011, 02:16:41 AM »
Hi,

Is there an application available that will monitor a live feed and only record and save to file when there is audio present?

Thanks

Daryl

I would use Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/).

If you go to the Preferences, there is an option for "Sound Activated Recording."

Turn on this setting to only record when there is audio playing, eliminating any extra periods of no sound.

If your sound card supports it, you can use something like Realtek Audio Mixer to just pick up the sound of the stream as an input, or if not you can just wire it with a 3.5mm cable from your Headset Out to Line In jack.

The secret lies in the bottom part of bcarter's post:

Yep all sorted.  THANKS for the replies.  I'm using VLC media player as the front end for Audacity running sound activated recording as suggested.  It just took awhile to get my head around how to get it set up and running.

THANKS AGAIN

Well you got me thinking and searching. If you want to go to a pure software solution you might look at these.

Virtual Audio Cable http://www.ntonyx.com/vac.htm that lets you connect two programs using a "virtual device" thus eliminating the need for cables and even an audio card. This could be used in your setup to connect VLC etc to Audacity etc without wires or a sound card. This allows you to use the sound card on the machine for sound and you wont have to worry about something unwanted getting in the recording.

Or something like MP3 Output Plugin for Winamp http://www.winamp.com/plugin/mp3-output-plugin/33396 for an all in one solution.

I haven't had time to try these out but they look promising.
