You'll hear the AA flight get cleared into position and hold 16L. Then there is a controller shift change. Then AA is cleared for takeoff 16L Then controller tells Southwest landing 16C to cross 16L at N. Then you hear American "aborting." Then after a few more transmissions from the first controller the other controller takes over again....

Kinda scary, you can tell the AA pilot is a bit tense when he calls the abort...

Good clip...Thats kinda scary. Cleared the AA for takeoff, the next aircraft into position and hold, then clears Southwest to cross in front of departing AA almost in the same breath. Was she assuming the AA flight would be airborne and past the intersection by the time the SW aircraft got to 16L? Interesting to see how this plays out.

what's real interesting is, she tells the southwest that there is traffic holding in position. Then in the next transmission she tells an arriving aircraft that a H/B757 is departing the left.

you cant assume the aircraft will be airborn before a certain point, its clear she forgot about the american, her fault.

I thought it was a Horizon Dash-8 she cleared into position behind the departing 757.

Taxiway November is about 6000 feet down the runway 16L; it sounded to me like she was crossing the SWA under the AA she thought was/would be airborne..or just forgot about him.

I was.  It was a very fast abort that required maintenance inspection and I hope it never happens again.

Was that one of those "Did she just say what I think she just said" moments?  Because thats what I said to myself listening to this.  How far along in the takeoff roll were you?

Sounds like she inadvertently allowed SWA2918 to cross the active runway and forgot about AA324 that she just cleard to take off moments earlier? Her tone of voice seemed "detached" to the situation even after AA324 called the abort over the radio. Overworked controller? Glad an accident was avoided.

Interesting clip. Thanks for posting gmwnet.
