KSFB - SeaRay flipped on lake
« on: April 10, 2008, 12:17:23 PM »
A SeaRay amphib flipped on Lake Jessup this morning.  The article describes the lake as "alligator infested" - which is true.  If you live in Florida you know that any body of water bigger than a tire rut has at least one gator in it.  Lake Jessup does seem to have more than it's fair share though.  I cross it every morning on my way to work and usually see a half dozen of them cruising on the surface.   I'm wondering if he hit one and flipped it.

Pilot was rescued and he's ok according to reports.  Clip attached.

Apparently this story has quite a humourous twist to it.  NPR just covered this story last week.

The pilot was still learning to fly the airplane when he crashed into the lake.  The odd part is....the plane crashed into the lake without him......2 miles after he fell out.  Apparently he hit the water at an odd angle and the impact caused him to hit the harness buckle releasing him from the seatbelt, and eventually the airplane.

That was a different incident.  Bet that pilot buys himself some sospenders before he goes out again.  ;)

A followup story on this crash:

Quote
Contrary to initial media reports, a mechanical problem -- not an alligator -- appears to have caused the crash, the two pilots said.

A preliminary study by investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration found a locating nut that holds the experimental aircraft's horizontal stabilizers in place came loose, causing the tail section to come apart, Mendelson said.
