Delta Boeing 747-400 Suffers Uncontained Failure Of #2 Near KDTW
« on: November 04, 2011, 09:42:10 AM »
Delta Boeing 747-400 N661US suffered an uncotainted faiure of the #2 PW4056 power plant while climbing through 5,000 feet out of KDTW on 10/23/11. The flight was bound for Tokyo. The crew leveled off at 7,000 ft, put out the fire, dump fuel, and return to KDTW for a safe landing.  Post-flight inspections revealed severe damage to the engine and wing with large holes in the cowling as well as damage to slats, flaps and aileron. It is unclear at this time what caused the failure. Early speculation points to the high-pressure compressor section.
