Occurred at Reno/Stead airport (KRTS), not covered on LiveATC.  Reno/Tahoe (KRNO) is about 20 miles away, I wonder if there is anything on that feed (News helicopters, Lifeguard, etc.)

I was listening to the KRNO feed on tuesday the 13th and was hearing intermittent air race traffic.  Seemed to be mostly race control clearing people onto the course.  Im not sure if this was still happening during the accident.

Turns out that the race was captured on the KRNO feed.  I did a quick edit of the beginning of the race.  This is the line up for the start of the race.  The voice you hear is the pace pilot.  About 10 minutes after this you can hear the first medical helicopter heading to stead air field.

CNN is reporting that the pilot issued a mayday call before the crash, which must have been on a different frequency.

In the videos you can hear the engine running just prior to impact. I don't know anything about P-51's and their fuel capacity, but I would have thought there would at least have been small patches of fuel born fire.

There are some photos emerging (now posted on CNN.com) that show an elevator trim tab breaking loose from the tail assembly just prior to the plane pitching up and then diving earthward.

As for the lack of post-impact fire, I assumed perhaps Mr. Leeward wasn't carrying much fuel anyway as a means of achieving higher speeds.

The NSTB will do it's usual investigation, but I think the result will be, 'structural failure of elevator control following separation of trim tab due to trim tab flutter'.
