"Direct Hook"

Hello ...

Can someone explain to me what the maneuvor "direct hook" means? I hear this ATC instruction via the tower on the departure frequency. I've heard this one a million times listening to KAUS ATC.

Hook, assuming you are hearing that correctly, is either a VOR nearby the airport or an intersection (which would then be spelled with five characters).   "Direct" is just the instruction "fly directly to,"  so the entire phrase would be "fly DIRECTly to {VOR/Intersection} HOOK."

Now, where is this navaid/fix?  I took a look at the approach plates for KAUS and did not see any navaid/fix that remotely sounds like HOOK.  I am still looking on some charts to see if this is part of a departure procedure or a nearby VOR.

Okay, found it.  HOOKK is an intersection to the east/northeast of the airport, as seen on this chart:



KAUS is the blue circle located on the bottom left of this image.

So, "Direct hook" that you are hearing is actually, "fly DIRECTly to HOOKK."   HOOKK must be a departure gate of sorts for KAUS.

I have Flight Explorer and have watched that area a few times along with listening to live ATC. I cannot believe I missed that easy one.
