Listening to KPHL tower and notice that aircraft are being directed to a "spot 8" when given taxi instruction to the ramp.  Anyone know what that is?

These are pre-designated spots on the airport where aircraft contact Ground control.  In Cleveland, we use the "spot" for taxi out of the ramp (we have 6 "spots").  These are all arranged with the control tower and Continental (the largest operator at the airport and they also control most of the ramp).

In this case, it sounds like aircraft are being taxiied to a particular spot where they will contact the ramp tower for taxi to their gate.  I know earlier that PHL had flow control to the airport.

atcman23 has it!  Aircraft are directed to these designated spots where they will usually contact either ramp control (incoming flights) or ground (outgoing) for further taxi instructions.  They used to be shown on the PHL airport diagram but I note that the newest updates don't show them.  As I recall they start with spot 1 near the intersection of taxiways J and Y near terminal A and go up to spot 16 (I think but could be wrong about how high they go) all the way around by terminal F.
