What advantages does flight following offer a pilot flying in VFR conditions?

Traffic advisories, weather updates (when transmitted to other aircraft on freq), radar vectors if requested, an Air Traffic Controller to talk to.

You're more likely to have better spacial awareness when you're being updated about traffic around you than when you don't talk to them and are in a busy area.  This doesn't imply that you can't have spacial awareness when not talking, just likely to have more when you are talking and recieving flight following.
