When a pilot announces "I have information papa" or quebec etc., What are they referring to?

They are stating they have the ATIS, automated terminal information service, this is a looped broadcast of all important information for an airport.  Such as the weather, runways in use, important NOTAMs etc.  The ATIS is updated hourly, and given a name starting with Alpha for A, then Bravo for B, so the controllers will know the pilot has the most up to date ATIS.  This allows controllers to omit giving the pilot the information in the ATIS, which is required prior to landing.
