(Air Force One Backup Rattles New York Nerves
(New York Times)
By Matthew L. Wald AND A. G. Sulzberger

Jim Brown

A reader, Jim Brown, took this photograph from 10 Exchange Place in Jersey City, looking toward 77 Hudson Street and the Statue of Liberty. In the photo, the plane appears closer than it actually was.
Updated, 3:37 p.m. | An Air Force One lookalike, the backup plane for the one regularly used by the president, flew low over parts of New York and New Jersey on Monday morning, accompanied by two F-16 fighters, so Air Force photographers could take pictures high above the New York harbor.

But the exercise — conducted without any notification to the public — caused momentary panic in some quarters and led to the evacuation of several buildings in Lower Manhattan and Jersey City. By the afternoon, the situation had turned into a political fuse box, with Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg saying that he was “furious” that he had not been told in advance about the flyover and the White House facing questions about it. In unusually harsh language, the mayor criticized the Defense Department for conducting the exercise and the Federal Aviation Administration for being secretive about it.

The flyover, which began around 10 a.m., resulted in widespread confusion and a flood of calls to emergency hot lines. Perplexed officials at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and other authorities were inundated with calls from anxious ferry passengers, office workers and residents.

Haha...oops!  Looks like they still need to work on their lines of communication.

Also, the picture link didn't make it in to your post.

Heads are going to roll over this one.  Reportedly, Obama was furious when told about it and even though the FAA was informed about it, they were forbidden to release any info to the public.  Some one at the White  House took responsibility for this hair-brained idea.  His next public statement will probably be, " You want fries with that?"  :-D

Here is a new vid...turns out this was a photo opp for Air Force One, not a presidential trip! The President was "fuming" about it!

I was the controller who cleared that aircraft down there. I had no idea about the flight beforehand & I certainly had no idea that it was cause such a stink. Now the photos aren't being released. This gang can't shoot straight either.

WASHINGTON — The White House official who authorized a $328,835 photo-op of Air Force One soaring above New York City resigned Friday just weeks after the flyover sparked panicked workers to rush into the streets and flashbacks to Sept. 11. Louis Caldera said the controversy had "made it impossible for me to effectively lead the White House Military Office," which is responsible for presidential aircraft.

The ultimate culprit has been identified personally by the President of the United States.  At a recent banquet, President Obama brought up the touchy subject of what happened with this debacle.
