Another Antenna Question
« on: January 01, 2007, 01:35:25 AM »
I know theres been ALOT of antenna questions, but with all the info ive read, i decided between three antennas. Im hoping someone can give me there opinion on them.

I already pick up oakland center(sacramento), and norcal approach, this is with my cheaper radioshack "mini-discone." Im hoping to pick up KSMF from my house which is just about 20 miles west. I barely hear the tower, with good weather, so im hoping one of those three antennas will help me.

A better antenna, or an antenna designed for the task at hand, will always help.  In the end, though, the quality and hight above average terrain (in the direction of the airport) of your location means a lot.

Just read this post on antennas
I'm listening on my ICOM Ic706mk2g  and Diamond X7000 , a tri band amateur radio antenna  and I hear aircraft well down the South Island of NZ form the North Island
and often can even hear Christchurch ATC directly   probably 300Km away.
So yes a high gain antenna mounted high with low loss coax makes all the difference

I  prefer an antenna thats made for the band you want to listen to , better than a wide band version . That way you have better gain and also some rejection of unwanted frequencies that can cause overload / breakthrough in your receiver . In my case  Paging on 157 Mhz area
