Anybody want a NorCal or Las Vegas feed?
« on: August 19, 2005, 07:14:27 PM »
Hey all!

I live roughly 3 miles from KMHR and the NorCal facility. I'm about to set up a scanner and antenna for providing a feed, and am wondering if anyone here would like to have a good feed from NorCal Approach. This would cover the following:

KSMF, KSAC, KMHR, KMCC, KAUB, KBAB

various untowered airports, and Oakland Center for that area.

I also am working with Panevido restaurant in Las Vegas (where I used to live), and if things go well, can hook up some scanners there to provide a feed of KLAS, KHND, KVGT, Las Vegas Approach, and LA Center for that area. This one will take me longer to do, though.

If you're interested, please shout about it here, and I'll see what I can do to make it happen! :)

BL.

We are ALL interested if the feeds provide good audio.  We have been misisng a NORCAL feed for a while and the LAS addition would be greatly appreciated not only by me, but other feeders and listeners!

Please let me know if you need any assistance,

Actually, I do have some questions.. It's mainly the antenna. I've searched through the forums and have come up with 2 options: The J-pole (not sure on cost), and the Radio Shack 20-176 outdoor antenna.

Would cable need to be run from the antenna to the scanner? I only have a handheld at the moment, so I'm looking also at a desk scanner as well.

Also for the LAS feed.. could a feed be done from normal FM radio, piped through to the soundcard, then sent out over the 'net for the feed? The reason I'm asking, is because HND, LAS, and VGT all already have a feed (Tower only) for their settee areas adjacent to the runways on 88.5FM on a normal radio dial. This would alleviate the use for a scanner at one of those places, and still provide the feed. Is this possible?

Okay: 1. Most J-poles are custom made meaning that they are created entirely by the feeder and/or friends/family.  2. The 20-176 antenna looks alright, but for a little more money you can purchase a "Discone" antenna which provides great reception.  You will need coax cable to connect the antenna to the scanner.  This is fairly simple and only requires an adapter to adapt the coaxal connector to a BNC connector used when attching to the scanner

I have not heard of this being done before.  I have not heard about any air communications broadcasted on FM band radio.  I'll try and do some research and will get back to you!

So far that I've been able to see, they are the only ones doing it. It's something that the Clark County Dept. of Aviation is doing. It's an nice way to get tourists there, with listening to the comms as planes land and take off, especially into the fireworks shows at the casinos. But if it's possible to connect the sound card into something like the headphone jack of a stereo, there's an instant Class B and 2 Class D airport Tower feeds for you.

I miss listening to VGT and LAS. I used to live on flamingo and get both really well. Now I live in a dinky town 400 miles north of Vegas in good ol' Elko, Nevada. Just one question, where is the antenna going to be? I lived on Eastern and Flamingo and recieve KLAS, KVGT, and SOME KLSV. Im looking forward to it.

If I work it out right, the scanners will be hooked up at Panevido restaurant, Las Vegas Blvd and Sunset, across the street from the 1L/R threshold. If I can work out if you can go from a stereo to the PC, I think I can get it near/across the street from the viewing/settee area parallel to 25L/R on Sunset, just a bit down from the post office. The antenna for that from the airport authority is there as well.

VGT would be another story. Perhaps getting that one sponsored by the Las Vegas Flying Club would be a good idea, as they are on the field at VGT. It would beat trying to hide a scanner or something at the settee area there (corner of Cheyenne and Rancho/Decatur). I'll get to work on that.

You can connect the output of the stereo to the Line In of a PC sound card.  You'll just need the right audio cable.

How close are you to the field, and how many scanners are you looking at? If you need frequencies, I can provide you with those that Airnav doesn't have.
