Anyone Catch it??? YYZ Fuel Dump.. I think Feb 3rd
« on: February 16, 2006, 08:12:33 PM »
Just checking if anyone caught the fuel dump off of Pearson (toronto YYZ) in the early morning of I think Feb 3.. (I was up with work very late for about 3 consecutive days and they have blurred together a bit)

Anyway, it was a small jet (citation I think..) that didn't get all the wheels up off of take-off.. The controller sent it out on the 090 radial of the toronto VOR (over the lake) and then had him do a fuel dump.. at 7000ft before bringing him back to Pearson.  Would like to go back and find it if I could.. or if anyone else managed to catch it..

I've always wondered why they have people dump fuel over water.  Is it possible for any of it to actually reach the ground?  I mean it's Jet-A...wouldn't it be evaporated within a thousand feet?

Jet fuel doesnt evaporate like gasoline does.... it takes a long time. Over water at high altitude allows it to break-up into very small dropplets and then is easily dilluted in the water below. At least thats the impression that I have gotten from what I have heard.

Why don't they just dump it over dry land?   :o ...kidding.

I think I'd hate to dump fuel... it's precious stuff!  I guess when it's needed though, anything is worth the safety of those on board.  :)

Toronto area fuel dumps are supposed to be done at 3,000 ASL or above on the YYZ 090 radial between 20 and 50 DME.  Aircraft are to avoid flight within 10 miles of the fuel dump track and within 3,000 feet below the aircraft dumping the fuel.

It was an IAI Westwind on February 23rd, I believe. I was out at YTZ and the controllers were doing a good job of broadcasting it on the frequency for all local traffic.

I can confirm it was on the YYZ 090 radial -- I thought I heard at the time it was between 20 and 30 DME, but it could have been 20 and 50 as binky stated. That would be a lot of extra turning and dizziness for the pilots
