Nothing Like A 747!

« on: December 25, 2009, 08:39:53 PM »

"WASHINGTON — A Northwest Airlines passenger from Nigeria, who said he was acting on al-Qaida's instructions, tried to blow up the plane Friday as it was landing in Detroit, law enforcement and national security officials said."

"There was nothing out of the ordinary until the flight was on final approach to Detroit, said Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory. That is when the pilot declared an emergency and landed without incident shortly thereafter, Cory said in an e-mail message. The plane landed at 11:51 a.m. EST."

"A Northwest Airlines Airbus A330-300 in Delta colors, registration N820NW performing flight NW-253 from Amsterdam (Netherlands) to Detroit,MI (USA) with 278 passengers, was on approach to Detroit, when a Nigerian male passenger attempted to ignite a powdery substance attached to one of his legs. Passengers alerted by the smell and shine of fire stormed out of their seats and subdued the Nigerian. The crew declared emergency reporting a possible hijack attempt and continued for a safe landing at Detroit, the airplane rolled past the end of the runway (supposedly 04L) and stopped on the stop area, where passengers disembarked. The Nigerian was taken into custody and is reported to have received second degree burns to his leg."

Mayday might be on this archive if anyone wants to take a listen.
Claim is that the incident occurred just as the plane was beginning
descent.

OR...I could be totally wasting your time.

I'm out of town and don't have access to my stores of sophisticated audio eavesdropping and editing software tools.

P.S. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I couldn't hear anything related to this incident on the Toronto West archive clip.

I see from the av herald article that the incident occurred on approach when gear was being lowered. I assume the emergency call would be on DTW tower frequency. Unfortunately no feeds from DTW.

I am new here and I'm not a pilot nor a controller. I defer to those of you who are more experienced at this.

Not sure which facility NWA253 declared an emergency with - from Toronto Center I can confirm a clean handoff to Cleveland Center 132.25 - don't have any Detroit TRACON or Tower coverage.  No ZOB Cleveland Center coverage on that frequency.

From the first article:

"Flight 253 with 278 passengers and 11 crew members aboard was about 20 minutes from the airport when passengers heard popping noises, witnesses said"

More then likely would have been with Detroit Approach at that point would be my guess...

Update:

"US charges Nigerian with trying to blow up plane"

"WASHINGTON — A Nigerian passenger onboard the same Northwest Airlines route that was attacked on Christmas Day was taken into custody in Detroit on Sunday after locking himself in the bathroom for an hour and becoming verbally disruptive upon landing, officials said."

"Delta Air Lines spokeswoman Susan Elliott said crew members on Sunday requested that security remove the man from Flight 253 after he became disruptive. The remaining 255 passengers got off safely, she said."

Sorry. If I had been aware of the complete media saturation regarding Jasper the Flying Dutchmen, I might not have been so eager to post his picture here.  We should always try to have fresh rather than day old donuts.
