ATC in the movies - Ground Control
« on: July 29, 2008, 09:29:41 AM »
I just had the misfortune of watching Ground Control last night and wanted to venture that it could be the biggest mistake of a movie I have ever seen

Why go to the movies and pay hard earned money to see Ground Control when you can simply listen to LiveATC's feed of JFK ground?  Much more entertaining, IMO.  :-)

Watch this and you will say to yourself, "Hey, I've seen this before."

Hi Colin,

Great topic of ATC in the movies.

What are your (and others) favorite aviation related films or movies with ATC scenes?

Here are some of my favorites:

1. Indianapolis Center ATC segment in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". (07m:37s-11m:02s)
2. Cliff Robertson as an alcoholic pilot in "The Pilot".
3. Van Nuys documentary "16 Right"
4. "Blue Thunder" A real air traffic controller / actor provided authentic ATC Chatter. (One of the best air to air helecopter scenes I've seen in a film).
5. The first "Airport" movie.

...
3. Van Nuys documentary "16 Right"

Those would be my two favorites.

Pushing Tin is a GREAT movie but never have I seen a movie so unrealistic... it is definitely a classic movie though... I especially like when he gets home from a night shift, pulls into his driveway and realizes that he's in the wrong driveway (I've actually done this after a 12-hour night shift in the military...)

It also has some of the best lines...
If you guys enjoyed the movie, read this article, it's even funnier and it's where they got the idea FOR the movie:

haha thats prolly the best article ive read about ATC

great stuff there!

And, though it may be unrealistic, as ive heard from many experienced ATC's,  Pushing Tin is a good good movie, and I also agree with 628PW up there,    its never a bad thing when u get to look at Angelina Jolie!!

And even though its definitely not an ATC movie,  though it has some ATC in it (prolly the most incorrect, yet the funniest ever),    you can not rule out "Airplane" and "Airplane 2"

lol

Pushing Tin is a GREAT movie but never have I seen a movie so unrealistic...

There was a movie that DiCaprio made that came out a year or so after Titanic. Name of it escapes me.. but the ATC and pilot readbacks were worse than Pushing Tin, the Airplane ("Flying High" outside the US), and Ground control Combined.

A clip I remember seeing is that ATC cleared DiCaprio (as the pilot which he read back!) to land on Runway 44.

:?

lol its funny u mention runway 44, because in DiCaprio's movie, "Catch Me If You Can,"  as he is being transported back to the U.S., he turns to Carl Hanraddy (Tom Hanks) and says, "Look, there's LaGuardia!  Runway 44!"

tyketto, could the movie you are referring to be "catch me if you can"? A movie about a guy who basically conned his way through life... he pretended to be an airline pilot in part of the movie, even though he never had a license or anything... scary thing is it's a true story... book is even better...
