Bird Strike at KFAR
« on: June 16, 2010, 11:48:11 AM »
Bird strike at KFAR Monday morning. I guess it was a medical chopper the bird went through the windshield. No audio at the moment.

ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) — The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating whether a bird strike shattered a windshield on a medical helicopter that was flying from Aberdeen to Fargo.

The Careflight helicopter from Avera St. Luke's Hospital made a safe emergency landing early Monday at Hector International Airport in Fargo. The pilot was treated for minor injuries. A paramedic, nurse and patient also were onboard.

In September 2002, four people were killed in a Careflight helicopter crash south of Doland. An official cause has never been released.

A few more details can be found in the following article, including the only decent photo I could find of N509MT, the Careflight Bell 407 helicopter involved:

For those of you more techno-savvy than myself that care to edit this clip, this incident can be found in the archives:

Fargo Tower (KFAR), 14 June 2010, ~05:50Z (12:50AM CDT) to ~06:15Z (1:15AM CDT):

Initial check in was about ~05:50Z when N509MT was northbound approaching Fargo. Next transmission was Fargo Tower confirming N509MT's destination hospital ~06:05Z, followed ~90 seconds later by the initial report of the birdstrilke. Last relative communications ended after a safe landing at Hector (KFAR) ~06:15Z.
