BOS question
« on: August 06, 2007, 09:48:36 PM »
Hi people, I'm a long-time listener, first-time poster. As I live in the Boston area, I usually listen to BOS tower or the approaches, depending upon the weather conditions. One question:

What is "rip it" (sp?) that pilots refer to when they're approaching runway 27?

RIPIT is the final approach fix for the ILS 27 approach into Boston.  Technically, RIPIT is only the final approach fix when the glideslope is inoperative (non-precision approach), but most people call it the FAF anyway.

Jason, have you started your instrument? I'm impressed (not to sound condescending) because I know many people who are instrument rated and still think that the maltese cross on an precision approach is the FAF.

Not yet, but I'm pretty familiar with instrument procedures.  You are correct in that it is a very common misconception, I've heard a lot of instrument rated folks myself that don't understand the only time the maltese serves as the FAF is on a non-precision approach, otherwise the FAF on a precision approach is at the glide slope intercept.

Thanks for the compliment.

You know what...as soon as I can get enough money to do my commercial XC, I think I'll go down to HPN...then maybe pop over to DXR and visit my uncle.

We'll have to talk.
