Boston 128.050 & 134.950
« on: January 05, 2014, 08:31:56 PM »
Is there a time of day or is it volume & direction that dictates which frequency is being used ?  In particular east and westbound traffic.

I'm have not heard 133.45 in a while and wonder if it has also moved ?

Cheers

You mean 134.950 ? Had a quick listen to the BOS Atlantic archive this evening and heard a few northbound flights get handed off to 134.95 from 126.22, although most of the traffic was on more southern routes and getting handed off to 133.45. Also on the ZBW 128.05 archive at the same time I heard a southbound flight get handed off to 134.950.

When it's slow they combine the 128.050 and 134.950 sectors. Southbound would stay on 128.050 and northbound would stay on 134.950. I also seem to recall they had the ability to cross-couple these two frequencies ?

Generally speaking, westbound flights coming from Europe tend to enter US airspace further north because they are typically using more northerly tracks across the Atlantic than they do when they go back eastbound.  This results in 128.05 and 134.95 being quite busy from late morning to afternoon.  133.45 is not as busy at this time of day, in fact, you might hear very little on this frequency during the day.

In the evening however, when all the flights go back east across the Atlantic, they usually use more southerly tracks across the Atlantic so you would hear more activity on 133.45 because of this.

I hope this makes some sense :)

As far as eastbound if they are north of roughly Rumford/Rangeley ME they would be in the 128.05 sector and south of that 134.95 after crossing the ME-NH border.

Yes, this does make sense after changing up my listening times. Essentially the north is covered with 128.05 and south has 134.950.  I've just purchased a 6 element yagi cut for 120-135 and hope that let's me hear 133.45 and the hand off to Moncton.

I will keep you posted.

Cheers !

Hey Sprint,

Just out of curiosity, whereabouts are you located?

There have been some reception issues recently on the feed that covers 133.450.  The primary transmitter for that frequency is in Hyannis, MA.

We're working on getting better coverage for 128.75 and 133.45 but it may take a while.  It may go faster once we get out of this cold snap.  :-)
