I think the point of the "race" was to show how the logistics involved in air travel need to be taken into consideration.  Sometimes it makes more sense to take ground transportation.  Anyone living within a 5 hour drive to EWR must seriously consider if it is worth the risk of extensive delays and missing an international connection versus driving.

This example of a 40 mile flight offered these bikers the chance to prove this by having the air traveler depart from the same point as the bicyclists allowing for security at the airport.

So that was the point of the head start.  Jet Blue succeeded at getting some marketing attention and the cyclists had some good natured fun.
