CADORS: 2009O0179

The Cathay Pacific Airlines Limited Boeing 747-400 series aircraft (operating as flight CPA827) had departed on a scheduled IFR flight from Toronto (LBPIA) (CYYZ) to Hong Kong International Airport, Hong Kong (China) (VHHH). At approximately 0600Z, the flight crew of UAL1112 reported a large animal on runway 23 between taxiway intersections HOTEL2 and HOTEL4. MAINTENANCE95 responded and found the remains of a dead coyote in pieces. The previous departure was CPA827 at 0537Z. The runway was closed from 0600Z until 0625Z. Ops. impact - one (1) aircraft landed on runway 15L, three (3) aircraft landed on runway 24R.

Did the crew ever report hitting anything?

Unless it was the nose gear that hit it, the crew probably didn't see it, or feel it for that matter.

I'd hate to be MX on the other end of that flight! What a mess!

I assume it was taken out by one of the main gear or bogeys...lots of tires back there.

Can you imagine the mess it left in the gear bay, on the gear itself, not to mention, the underside of the airplane?!?! YUK!  :|

It took a half an hour to clean up. Perhaps a shovel and wheelbarrow doesn't do the trick.

Highway safety scoop

"Fitting the trucks with this scoop to remove debris such as dead animals and tires from our highways safely and fast will cut down on related accidents and injury to maintenance personnel."

Personally, I think they'd do better to just burn off the residue with a blow torch.

Everything in the above incident is correct, including the runway intersections and the Maintenance unit, but, CX does not operate pax 747s out of YYZ.  All flights are 773 with the odd 346.  CX889 has diverted here with a 744 a few times but I don't recall anything around Jan 25.
