I've noticed that the feed for CYOW has been down quite a bit.

In late April, it was down for about 20+ days (give or take). It then became available for a short period and it's down again (since May 17). Anyone know why?

Feeds become unavailable from time to time for a variety of reasons.  It isn't really important what they are, but do know that we monitor all feeds and try to get them back online ASAP, when possible.

Sometimes it isn't possible to get them back that quickly - and we would rather spend time fixing them than communicate promise dates endlessly - dates that can't always be met.

I've held back from responding to this thread until now...

I can understand and accept that a feed may be down on occasions due to technical difficulties/power outags/weather/problems with the scanner, etc. However, I am of the impression that when this feed down, it is NOT due to technical issues, but rather the volunteer contributor who is providing the feed is intentionally pulling the scanner off the computer.

Shortly after you replied to my post, the CYOW feed became available again, but only for a short period of time as it is down again as of 2013-06-09 00:22:04 (I'm guessing June 8, 2013 8:22pm ET). This now the third time where this feed is down. The CYOW feed since April has been off-air more than it has been on-air, which is why I question whether there is actually a technical issue. Furthermore, there is no notice posted by the volunteer contributor onto this forum of the discussion board (http://www.liveatc.net/forums/feed-outagestatus-reports/). This is the reason I created this thread to inquire why it is down.

I am willing to be stand corrected if what I am saying is wrong, but that is the impression I have. Prior to April, the feed was more readily available with the occasional outage.

Not all providers have the time to post updates.  We work with them to get feeds back online.  Sometimes a variety of factors prevents them from getting feeds back online in a timely manner.  Real life stuff.

I can appreciate that reliability is important to you.  It looks like you are in the Ottawa area - you might consider putting up an antenna and a scanner to listen - that way, you wouldn't have to be out of coverage.

I find it amazing that people will complain about feeds that are provided FREE OF CHARGE to them. Personally I appreciate the time and effort spent by many volunteers who offer their time and money to put up these feeds. This complaint seems to be beyond the pale and I think the suggestion that they put up their own antenna and receiver is right on the money. If you want assured availability then put your own money into what you want. Otherwise, appreciate what is given freely to you, and be nice, get rid of your mundane and childish sounding sense of entitlement and if you can't do that then just shut up!

My opinion, YMMV. Thanks again to all of you that provide these feeds.

If you would read Post #3 , I said that I accept the fact that the feed may be down occasionally due to various reasons I stated. However at the time, the feed for Ottawa was down more than it was up. When the feed came back online, it was only for a short period of time then became offline again for another extended period of time. I felt at the time that the feed was being removed intentionally.

After "dave" responded in Post #4, the feed came back online a few days after. And a tweet was made on the reason ( https://twitter.com/liveatc/status/347762919854989312 ). Given that LiveATC tweets out feed outage, had an explanation been given on to what happened (or a post by the Listener Forum by the feed volunteer), I would not have created this thread to inquire what was going on and expressed my thoughts. Again, I accept the fact that the feed may be down occasionally.

I make no apologies for asking why the feed is down as there are other users inquiring about why their interested feeds are down in the Listener Forum. I'm no different. In fact, there have been other feeds that have been down for a much shorter period where people inquired (e.g. http://www.liveatc.net/forums/listener-forum/charlotte-duglas-feed-down/ ).

As for your comment: I would like to my own scanner to listen to ATC (and to other things). But there are no stores in Ottawa that sell scanners, the closest store is in Durham, Ontario.

I read the entire thread and I stand-by my statement. Your messages in this thread go beyond the simple reporting of an outage, or an ongoing problem. Perhaps you should re-read your own thread here and ask yourself if you don't sound just a little like an entitled teenager who has had some toy taken away from him. As I have had five teens of my own, I know what this sounds like.

I have no objection to your inquiring about Ottawa. However, you stray, in a public forum, into basically making unfounded accusations, against the provider of the thread, or the provider of this website, that is where you clearly step over the line. In my mind, the provider of the feed has every right to do whatever he wants with his feed, especially since YOU are not paying for it. Additionally, you can't possibly know what is happening with the provider of the feed, and it's really not this websites responsibility to chase down every provider and grill them on their uptime.

It is YOUR responsibility to be a good LiveATC citizen to respect the free nature of this website, to respect the money, time and effort that goes into each and every provider site and enjoy this as entertainment. It is not an FAA (or any other government) site with any guarantees or expectations of high availability. No where do I see on this website any statement with respect to high availability of any feed. Hey, I'm just happy to be able to listen to LAS when I can.

OK, enough.  The original point was made - this is degenerating into unacceptable behavior - and that's the last thing I want here.

Thanks,
Dave
