CYOW - FAB860 - Fuel Dump over Gatineau Park
« on: June 01, 2009, 08:20:33 PM »
CADORS Number: 2009O0978   Occurrence Date: 2009/05/30

The First Air Boeing 727-200 series aircraft (operating as flight FAB860) was departing on a scheduled IFR flight from Ottawa (M-CIA) (CYOW) to Iqaluit Airport (CYFB). On take-off, the flight crew advised they had to shut down their center engine. They indicated that they would be returning to the airport but needed to dump fuel first. The flight crew did not declare an emergency but requested the presence of the emergency vehicles. The aircraft landed without incident at 1404Z after conducting a fuel dump at 6,000 feet from 1332Z (45º43'N 076º03'W) to 1343Z (45º55'N 074º55'W). Ops. impact -- unknown.

OK this may be of limited interest to most of you.
Notice how he manages to dump a load at the northern end of Harrington Lake.

Isn't there a no-fly zone there?

If I pissed in the park, I'd probably get fined.

From 6000 feet, jet fuel from a nozzle would evaporate before hitting the ground.

Correct. It is atomized as it leaves the nozzle, and evaporates rather quickly.
