Distributed Antenna System?

This question may have already been posed...

Why is it that the antenna setup for avaition seems to always be 4 towers with four antennae each?  Is it is DAS?  Is there a reason for the 4 towers?  Are the multiple antennae per tower for primary, secondary, tertiary (this has a name, right?  BUIC?), et al transmitters?  What's the reason/science behind it all?
